Does Racial Bias in Florida Sentencing exist?
We would all like to think Racial Bias in Florida Sentencing doesn’t exist. However, it is an unfortunate reality. Attached is an article that highlights what many of us have realized for years, racism exists is present in the courtroom. The article provides examples of how a person’s skin color and only his/her skin color can result in a different sentence. Florida’s sentencing laws are inherently racist, but to realize that judges, when given discretion, choose to exercise it in such vastly unfair ways is incredibly disturbing. While it is true that no two criminal defendants are the same, race can never be allowed to affect a sentence.
I fight daily to ensure that my clients are treated equally regardless of race, religion, sex, or any other label society chooses to assign.
